Serge Poliakoff

Moscow 1900 - 1969 Paris

Serge Poliakoff is considered a leading proponent of the École de Paris. He developed a very individual form of abstract painting, arranging different fields of colour alongside one another. Wassily Kandinsky had a determining influence on his abstraction, through Sonia and Robert Delaunay he came to appreciate the emotive potential of colour and developed an interest in simultaneous contrasts, while the sculptor Otto Freundlich inspired him with his curved colour-form compositions.
