August Macke

Battle of Turks

pencil on paper
1912
11,5 x 19,9 cm / 4 1/2 x 7 7/8 in.

Presumably inspired by Franz Marc and his enthusiasm for Eugene Delacroix, Macke created the present drawing. For Marc, Delacroix was an example for painting which searches for the essence of movement and life, and seeks to break free from the restraints of formal representation. Macke achieved this in a masterly manner in the dynamic drawing.
