Alexander Calder

Cork with wire spiral

cork and wire
1945
Höhe 8 cm / 3,15 in.

Alexander Calder had the ability of spontaneously creating something special from ordinary material, in this case a piece of wire and a wine cork, which he turned into an original object. This not only demonstrates his skill in working with metal, but also his ingenuity as an artist. The present work was created and gifted by the artist at the end of a dinner in 1945 to one of his neighbours in Roxbury, where it remained for over 50 years.
