Brown's rough semi-figurative works are influenced by primitive art and classic modernism. Much of his work is a non-representational but contains signs of recognizable faces or objects. The line between representation and abstraction is often blurred in his pictures. Besides paintings Brown has created sculptures and series of prints at various points in his career, and in the 1990s started to work with collage.
