"Only once, in 1974, Twombly creates a cycle of ten prints, the portfolio "Natural History Part I, Mushrooms", in which he transfers the collage technique to different complex printing processes. [...] These prints [...] always begin with an image that Twombly took from a book about mushrooms. Instead of proceeding paradigmatically, he arranged various different reproductions from magazines, photos, fragments of colour scales and colourfully drawn passages to create spaces of multifaceted innuendos and often paradox analogies" (Translation of: Heiner Bastian, Cy Twombly.
