The French sculptor, painter, and graphic artist, was an early proponent of Expressionism. He initially practised painting, then turned to ceramics and weaving, and relatively late to sculpture. He strove more for perfection than for originality, his style changed very little during his career. The main subject of Maillol's mature work was the female body. His simplified style is perceived as an important precursor to later artists, especially sculptors.
