Christian Rohlfs was a significant German artist of Classic Modernism. Rohlfs was a member of the Sonderbund westdeutscher Kunstfreunde und Künstler, the Neue Secession and the Freie Secession. He worked through the Naturalism of the Weimar Academy to Impressionism until he finally reached his Expressionist style. This mature style brought forth his most powerful works, mainly representing still lifes and groups of figures. In honour of the 80 year old artist, the Christian Rohlfs museum was opened in Hagen in the year 1929, yet only ten years later, the National socialists removed his works were from German museums as 'degenerate'.
