Eduard Bargheer is known particularly for his bright, often mosaic-like watercolours from the 1950s. The motif was abstracted and integrated in a fabric-like structure. For Bargheer, space was no longer objective, but an interplay of colour and light on the surface of the painting.
Bargheer became a member of the Hamburg Secession in 1929. From 1935 on, he lived mainly on the island of Ischia, which he captured in numerous watercolours. He participated in the Venice Biennale that same year, in the first documenta in Kassel in 1955, and in the second one in 1959. In 1957, Bargheer was a visiting lecturer at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg, and from 1963 to 1965, he was a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts.
