Ernst Wilhelm Nay is an important German representative of Classic Modernism. His compositions are marked by a rhythmic build-up of suspense through his play of lines and colours. However, his oeuvre thwarts classification, as it spans a wide range of styles. Nay's early works were influenced by Henri Matisse and Kal Hofer, but he soon began developing his very own pictorial language. It became manifest in individual phases, including Nay's 'Lofotenbilder', 'Hekatebilder', 'Rhythmische Bilder' as well as his famous 'Scheibenbilder' and 'Augenbilder'.
