George Grosz was an extraordinary painter, graphic artist and caricaturist, whose best works are today classified as belonging to the New Objectivity. His typical subjects are drastic and provocative representations of social contrasts in the big cities of the 1920s as well as a sharply caricatured criticism of the prevailing politics, economy, military and clergy. In addition to numerous contributions and illustrations in political magazines, Grosz organised the first Dada fair in Berlin together with Raoul Hausmann and John Heartfield. Defamed as 'degenerate' and denaturalised by the National Socialists, Grosz moved to New York, where he opened his own art school.
