Hans (Jean) Arp was considered one of the leading painters, sculptors and poets of Dadaism and Surrealism. Through Paul Klee, he exhibited his works together with the group 'Der Blaue Reiter' and participated in the 'Erster Deutscher Herbstsalon'. He was part of the Zürich Dada movement and developed Dada works and actions along with Max Ernst, El Lissitzky and Kurt Schwitters. Arp made not only illustrations, but also collages, paper and fabric pictures as well as wood reliefs. After having turned to Surrealism, from 1930 on, he started making free-standing sculptures in addition to his paper collages - the 'Papiers Dechirés'. His organically shaped sculptures are of the greatest possible harmony and beauty, which Arp heightened by using marble or polished bronze. He later became a member of the group 'Abstraction-Création'.
