Horst Antes studied painting in Karlsruhe with HAP Grieshaber. As a young man, he received prizes for his work. In his early paintings, he was influenced by Willem de Kooning and tried to find a style between figurative painting and Informel.
In the 1960s he developed the “Kopffüssler”, large heads on small feet, which he painted and sculpted in numerous variations. They became his trademark. He received several grants and prizes in the 1960s and he was invited to documenta in Kassel three times. At the age of 29, he received a teaching position at the Karlsruhe Academy, where he taught for over 20 years. His distinctive sculptures can be found in many public spaces in Germany.
