Influenced by the New Objectivity and Surrealism, Julius Bissier developed a non-representational style of painting. In the late 1930s, Bissier applied himself fully to abstract painting, owing to his friendship with Oskar Schlemmer and Willi Baumeister. He developed his own style after the war, reminiscent of the calligraphy of Far Eastern brush painting. This symbolic language had a major influence on the early works of the German Informel. From 1955 on, Bissier concentrated on small formats, the so-called 'Miniaturen'. He was invited to take part in documenta 2 (1959) and 3 (1964) in Kassel.
