Kees van Dongen was a significant Dutch painter who joined the Parisian art movement of the 'Fauves'. At the same time, he exhibited his works together with the German Expressionists from the group 'Die Brücke'. Especially his portraits, but also his expressive landscapes attracted great attention on account of their striking colours. Van Dongen joined the alluring circles of the Montparnasse and soon advanced to a successful portraitist and chronicler of the society of the golden 1920s and 1930s.
