Pablo Picasso is one of the leading artists of the 20th century, and certainly the most famous one. Along with Georges Braque, he is considered the inventor of Cubism. Throughout his career, he influenced the development of Modernism with ever new styles like no other. For all that, his art was always representational and held on to classical motifs and genres. His work was focused on the formulation of an own pictorial language that is not a reproduction of the outer appearance of things and persons, but an expression of their essence.
Among his most popular works are the 'Demoiselles d'Avignon' and 'Guernica'. Four of the ten most expensive paintings in the world are by Picasso, including the painting 'Les femmes d'Alger' from 1955.
