For over 50 years, Galerie Thomas has been closely associated with the work of Alexej von Jawlensky, who spent his decisive years as an artist in Munich during the Blauer Reiter period. In a solo exhibition, we present paintings, works on paper and prints from all of the artist’s creative phases.
The central motif in Alexej von Jawlensky’s works is the human face. His treatment ranges from the expressionistic, vividly coloured early works, through geometrical abstract heads, to the dark, shimmering spiritual meditations of his late works. But still-life and landscape also play a big role in Jawlensky’s artistic creation, such themes, too, have occupied him from the very beginning – subjects with which he followed a similar path from colour to abstraction. For Jawlensky, serial treatment of his relevant topics is an evolving process that allows him to completely clarify artistic questions.
