Tom Wesselmann was one of the founders of Pop Art. Following several exhibitions at Galerie Thomas, Galerie Thomas Modern will be showing, from February 22, 2013, a rich selection of works from all his creative phases.
Wesselmann reduced the depicted female figures to stereotypes. They have no faces; lips and nipples suffice as key optical stimuli. “Personality” said Wesselmann, “would only be distraction from the simple fact of nudity. ... From the beginning, I never gave them faces. A face gives a personal touch to a sexual act, makes it a portrait act. And that, I don´t like at all.”
Wesselmann always used trivial motifs, which he monumentalised and depicted in vivid colours. He worked in series, repeating the subjects nude, still life, landscape painting, interior and portrait. We are pleased to be able to present the extensive oeuvre of the Pop artist at Galerie Thomas Modern.
