Christie's New York sold Andy Warhol's 1964 silkscreen "Shot Sage Blue Marylin" at an auction record of $195 million at the beginning of May, ringing in this year’s spring auction season with some fanfare. The silkscreen print has thereby broken records by achieving the highest auction result for a 20th century artwork to date.
The portrait of the actress - celebrated as an icon of Pop Art and referred to by Christie’s as a "modern Mona Lisa" - is one of five variations of the work in different colour finishings, produced two years after the actress' passing.
