Sam Gilliam, one of the most important representatives of abstract painting in the USA, has passed away at the age of 88.
Sam Gilliam’s works are represented in numerous collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, MoMA (New York), the National Gallery of Art and the Whitney Museum of Art.
Important milestones in his life and career were his first institutional solo exhibition in Europe ‘The Music of Color’ as well as his participation in the 57th Biennale di Venezia.
His work captivates due to artistic techniques creating ’Beveled-edge paintings’ and the ’Drape Paintings’ for the first time in the 60ies.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of this remarkable artist and at the same time honored to represent his work in our current group exhibition ‘Cartography of Colours’ and to keep his spirit alive.
