Many of the drawings and paintings which August Macke created in Tegernsee, give an insight into the domestic environment, the life of the young couple, and their deep bond. Elisabeth Macke was the artist's favourite model at that time. The present drawing shows Elisabeth sitting in the bay window, reading a book. For the viewer, it creates the impression that the young artist could not believe his luck in being able to enjoy this family idyll at last with his beloved wife and his new-born son Walter. To him, it was exactly the trivial activity that was worthy of being preserved.
