Soutine’s Portraits: Cooks, Waiters & Bellboys
Soutine was one of the leading painters in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s and was seen by many as the heir to Vincent van Gogh. This major exhibition is the first time he has been exhibited in the United Kingdom in 35 years.
In the early 1920s, Soutine became fascinated by the cooks and waiting staff of French hotels and restaurants, attired in boldly coloured uniforms. Over the next decade, these humble models sat for him in Paris and the south of France. The resulting series of portraits offer powerful images of a new social class of service personnel, who moved from aristocratic households of past centuries to the luxury hotels and restaurants that arose in the late 19th and early 20th century. These often-overlooked figures from France’s most fashionable places of leisure, including the famous Maxim’s restaurant in Paris, appealed to Soutine’s idea that profound emotion and a deep sense of humanity could be found in such modest sitters. He strived to achieve the most forceful effects of colour from the bold whites, reds and blues of their different liveries.

Musical treat at Galerie Thomas
On stage that evening, Marie Sophie Hauzel (piano, born 2000), Ziyu He (violin, born 1999) and Ziming Ren (piano, born 1996) delivered a brilliant performance.
To an enthusiastic audience, they offered an ambitious program including works by Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, and Messiaen, culminating in a sonata for violin and piano (A major, op. 120) by César Franck. Whether solo or as a duo, the three young musicians were able to prove their extraordinary class, evidenced by the imposing number of awards they have already received at their young age. Numerous invitations to international competitions have brought the three to Europe, Asia and the US.
Harald Eggebrecht recently wrote of the 18 year-old violinist Ziyu He in the Süddeutsche Zeitung that he is „one of the greatest talents of our time, musically and technically confident, and burning with a youthful fire“ (November 25, 2017).
The audience in the packed hall acknowledged the three with prolonged applause and standing ovations.

New catalogues raisonnés of the paintings and drawings by Max Beckmann
Currently, new and complete catalogues of the paintings and drawings by Max Beckmann (1884-1950) are being created.
The catalogue raisonné of paintings is being edited by Dr. Anja Tiedemann (firstname.lastname@example.org), thanks to the initiative and financing of the Kaldewei Cultural Foundation. The catalogue raisonné of drawings is being prepared by Dr. Stephan von Wiese (email@example.com) and Hedda Finke (firstname.lastname@example.org), and is supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation and private sponsors.
Both independent but coordinated projects are to be completed in 2020. For their work, the authors are dependent on information about current locations, provenances and exhibition history. If you have further information, which will be kept confidential on request, the responsible persons would be pleased about being contacted.

Exhibition "The 'Blue Land' and the Noise of the City"
The Fondazione Braglia in the Franz Marc Museum - until October 3, 2017
The Braglia Collection is an Swiss private collection of German Expressionist art that has been assembled since the 1980s and was incorporated in a foundation a few years ago. The collection – that has only been accessible to the general public for a short time since the opening of the foundation’s museum space in Lugano in 2015 – will be exhibited for six months in the Franz Marc Museum.
The exhibition is to be seen as a dialogue between the collection of the Franz Marc Museum and the works of the Braglia Foundation and will be complemented by litarary texts from the first half of the 20th century. This interplay will expand the view of German Expressionism that, through its reception especially after World War II, has often been restricted to expressiveness, intense colours and innovative power, whereas the "darker", hidden side of this period in art has been neglected.

Nolde at Buchheim Museum
On the occasion of Emil Nolde’s 150th birthday, in august, works of our exhibition "9x Emil Nolde" were exhibited as loans at Buchheim Museum in Bernried.
On June 24 and 25, 2017, the 3rd Kunstareal-Fest takes place in Munich. Themed "Thought-provoking Impulses", all institutions of the art quarter invite visitors to stroll and look around.
Galerie Thomas and Galerie Thomas Modern also open their doors for this special occassion: on Saturday - as usual - between 10am and 6pm and on Sunday between 11am and 5pm. Apart from our current exhibition "Adolf Luther", we are also presenting selected works from Classic Modern and German Expressionism.

Franz Erhard Walther awarded "Golden Lion" at Venice Biennale
Franz Erhard Walther has been awarded the "Golden Lion" as best artist at Venice Biennale.
In his oeuvre, Walther combines a basic exploration of the notion of sculpture with an accentuation of its origination process. Although his works are reminiscent of Minimalism in their simplicity and reduced form, Walther's approach is different. He regards his objects as working material that can be used to trigger fundamental experiences. The viewers enter into an active dialogue with the works through so-called 'work actions', which alters the traditional concept of viewer and work and leads to an "other concept of the work (of art)" (Walther).
The Frankfurt artist Anne Imhof won the "Golden Lion" for Best National Participation, the German pavillon.

A. R. Penck died at age 77
Galerie Thomas Modern mourns the versatile artist A. R. Penck who died on May 2, 2017 at age 77 in Zurich.
A. R. Penck was the pen name of the artist Ralf Winkler and is his sly response to the dogmatic cultural policy of East Germany and the harassment he suffered as its former citizen, being an artist. At the same time, it points to a geomorphologist by the same name whom he holds in high esteem.
In the early 1960s, strongly schematised figures reminiscent of prehistoric cave paintings appeared in his oeuvre. These archaic figures and symbolic signs henceforth became the characteristic feature of his bold and colourful pictorial and formal language which he also applied to his sculptures.
In 1980, Penck was expatriated. He moved to West Germany and taught as a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1989 to 2005. Penck exhibited his works at the documenta and the Venice Biennale several times.
A. R. Penck died on May 2, 2017 at age 77 in Zurich.
